Dr. Sekar Viswanathan – Vice President, VIT

Dr. Sekar Viswanathan epitomises the vision, vibrant spirit and energy that has helped in establishing VIT as a premiere institute in the country. Dr. Sekar has over 30 years of experience in the industry and academics. He was a rank holder in Electronics and Communication Engineering from University of Madras. He received his Master’s degree in Computer Science from Rochester Institute of Technology, USA. He has a Ph.D., in the area of faculty motivation from University of Madras.

During the 90s, he served as the Vice-Chairman of his alma mater, Vellore Engineering College (which was later renamed as VIT). During this period, he had launched a number of new programmes and initiatives which paved way for the university status of VIT. Later, Dr. Sekar went to USA and worked with IBM, NetClerk and Walmart.com to gain international industrial experience. Walmart.com conferred the “Best Engineering Manager” and “Best Achiever” awards on him.

As VP at VIT, Dr. Sekar focuses on the university growth strategy, academic policies, international relations and placements. He has brought in numerous improvements to benefit the students including STARS (Support the Advancement of Rural Students) scheme, Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS), Semester Abroad Programme (SAP) and Curriculum for Applied Learning (CAL). Dr. Sekar was bestowed with the prestigious Young EDGE National Award in 2012 in recognition of his innovative and useful contributions to the field of education. He currently serves as Vice President of EPSI (Education Promotion Society for India), New Delhi and member of national-level Higher Education Committee of FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry), New Delhi.

Dr. Sandhya Pentareddy -Executive Director

Dr. Sandhya has given more than 26 years to product development, engineering management and higher education administration at USA and India.

Having started her career as a Software Engineer, she directed large scale product development. She was instrumental in nurturing certain start-ups and subsidiaries of multi-national companies in the USA and in India. She is best known for building high performance teams and effective products. She has worked for organizations well known for their excellence including Intuit, WalMart, Yodlee Inc., IBM and VIT.

She had also headed the Department of Computer Applications at VIT, when it was known as Vellore Engineering College, and has introduced the first entrance examinations in that institution. She now contributes to building the new VIT campuses.

She has contributed to research in Business Management through her work on complexity of leadership and various publications.

She firmly believes in taking pride in one’s work, making learning a joy, compassion and continuous improvement.

About the Programme

The objective of this programme is to learn the concepts of electronics and communication disciplines and apply them to solve real world problems in the industry. It emphasizes the design of hardware systems as well as communication systems.
The students start the programme learning the fundamental concepts of electrical engineering, while doing foundation courses in mathematics and physics in tandem. A student then progresses to study core subjects of electronics such as Analog and Digital Circuit Design, Control Engineering, and communications courses such as Analog and Digital Communications, Signals and Systems etc. The foundations laid by these basic courses enable students to select various electives that provide them with specialized skill sets.

Know Your Specialization:

VLSI: The objective of this specialization or minor is to provide a student with comprehensive knowledge of VLSI circuits and systems which is essential for electronics chip manufacturing industry. The programme emphasizes the key aspects of hardware design and development for VLSI applications. The prime focus is laid on the areas like VLSI system design, verification methodologies, ASIC design, FPGA based systems design and SOC based design and verification.

Image and Video Processing: The effectiveness of image and video processing in many applications including health care, communication, security, and space have made it a separate entity of Electronics Engineering. The objective of this specialization or minor is to educate our students with theoretical and practical concepts of Image and Video Processing to make them an expert of this field. This minor will offer related courses to provide essential fundamentals for making a career in Image and Video Processing.

Embedded Systems: The objective of this specialization or minor is to provide the key aspects of both hardware and software design and development for real time applications. The prime focus is laid on niche areas like, Embedded Controllers, Real Time Operating Systems, Automotive Electronics and In-Vehicle Networking, Agriculture and Health Care. The embedded discipline is an intersection of computer science and electrical engineering and its applications are found in sectors like automotive industry, avionics, consumer electronics, medical devices and defence.

IoT: The objective of this specialization or minor is to impart knowledge on the infrastructure, sensor and networking technologies of IoT. The takers of this minor will be able to analyse, design and develop IoT solutions to solve real world and industrial problems.

Electric Vehicle Technology: The objective of this specialization or minor is to provide the theory and basic design aspects of automotive and electric vehicle propulsion system. The key focus of this offered programme is to understand the areas that come under the umbrella of automotive electric vehicles including internal combustion engines, battery electric and hybrid vehicle fundamentals, and automotive electric and electronic control systems that are embedded in future automotive industry.

Electronics and Communication Engineering: The objective of this minor is to learn the concepts of hardware systems and communication systems and apply them to solve real world and industrial problems though they have opted for other programs than ECE. Electric Vehicle Technology Specialization The concern of rising pollution has attracted automobile industries toward electric vehicle technology and has become an essential requirement. Many automobile industries are working on this technology and many have already launched. The immediate need for replacing the crude oil-based automotive has created a huge demand for electrical vehicles and so the skilled engineers. As per the report from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, the EV industry alone will create one crore jobs by 2030. The VIT-AP University library a technology driven, user centric, innovative platform for the academic community which with the motto “Apply Knowledge and Improve life”. It maintains a perfect balance in providing priority to both traditional and modern concepts of library. The Library is well equipped with modem facilities and resources consisting of CDROMs, DVD-ROM, online databases, micro-documents, video cassettes, books, journals, etc. It has fully developed Digital Library equipped with necessary modern facilities in order to provide various digital mode Library services. It has rich collection of reference books, textbooks and research journals in electronic as well as in print form in the field of engineering, basic science and humanities, management, law and allied subjects. Besides the printed textbook and print journals, the library has subscribed for online full-text databases, e-journals, e-books and multimedia resources. are also part of library’s collection. The circulation system of the library is an open access system which is completely automated with RFID based technology with KOHA library open access automation software. Continuous efforts are being adopted in all possible operations of the library to maintain improved quality and efficiency in services.

The Library functions during 9am to 7 p.m. on all days excluding University holidays. During examination time, it remains open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

B.Tech. – Mechanical Engineering

About the Programme

The undergraduate programme in Mechanical Engineering has a strong focus over the design of mechanical systems and hands-on experience. The programme includes in-depth study of thermal, design, manufacturing and automation courses at core curriculum level to design the systems relevant for industries.

In addition to the theoretical and laboratory based curriculum, students have to complete engineering clinics courses and a capstone project. The students have to complete a co-op in the industry for one semester. This degree programme provides a strong foundation in mechanical engineering discipline, development of critical thinking and problem solving skills. Besides the technical skills, the academic programmes also sharpen communication, writing and problem solving skills.

The department has state of the art facilities in the Thermal Engineering Systems Laboratory, Fluid Lab, Materials Engineering Lab, Manufacturing Process Lab, Workshop, Computational Fluid Dynamics Lab, Strength of Materials Lab, Engines Lab, Robotic Laboratory, Heat Transfer Laboratory.

M.Tech. -(5 year Integrated) Software Engineering

About the Programme:

The Integrated M.Tech. (Software Engineering) programme is a 5 year integrated course.  It is specifically designed to meet the needs of IT industry in the areas of software engineering design and implementation. Our Software Engineering programme goes beyond teaching simple programming, and instead focuses on modern software engineering principles, tools, and analysis techniques for the design of large and complex software systems.

The initial level courses provide students with a core foundation in programming, mathematical reasoning, physics and circuit design. The later part blends fundamentals in IT programming including software engineering, database management system, computer networks, operating systems and storage technologies, IoT, and cloud computing.  Electives allow students to specialize in advanced fields such as database administration, network administration, big data, team management software, software professional management etc.

Students gain hands-on experience in the theory and application of software programming, as well as practical experience through Engineering Clinics, Capstone Project and Internship. They also gain work experience while pursuing the programme through the co-operative education or the industrial applications internship option. Students in their internships; are both full-time students and paid employees of the industrial partner. While working with professional developers at various industries, they are familiarised with fundamentals of the software and computer programming and its applications to solve real problems for customers.

  • A pass in Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the State / Central Board of Secondary Education or its equivalent examination with 65% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM).
