The Department of Mathematics, VIT-AP, organized a 3 day FDP on Statistical data analysis and Machine learning using R during 10^th to 12^th July 2018. 60 faculty members from all the departments, including Management and English & Soft Skills, took part in the programme. This FDP provided deep insights into statistical data analysis with the help of R. Dr. Indranil Mukhopadhyay along with Mrs. Sharmistha Das beautifully crafted the Programme. They kept the sessions quite interactive and were ever ready to help the participants. In these 3 days, Dr. Mukhopadhyay explained how to do Regression analysis, Hypothesis testing, and Machine learning using R, along with simultaneous hands-on sessions. He lucidly explained the concepts of the workshop and made it easier for everyone to understand. Lastly, he advised the participants to focus on intuition while dealing with statistical data and provided a perspective to look at statistics as the study of the variances in data.

The 72^nd Independence Day was celebrated at VIT-AP on 15^th August, 2018. The occasion was graced by Chief Guest Sri K. Satyanarayana, I.P.S. Director General, State Disaster Response and Fire Services, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and Guest of Honour Sri Lt. Col. S.M. Kannan, Chairman, VIT Alumni Association.

VIT-AP, in collaboration with APSSDC, hosted the IIEECP(IUCEE International Engineering Educator Certification Programme) Workshop for Batch-2 from 12^th -14^th July 2018 on the university campus.

The Bioscope club ( Movie making and Screening Club) had its first screening on campus. The chief guest for the inauguration ceremony was Ms. Kolluru Puja Aparna. Ms. Puja Aparna hails from Vijayawada who achieved an invitation (in 2013) for pursuing a four-year Undergraduate Course in Digital Film-making with a full scholarship at Ringling College of Art and Design, Sarasota (Florida) in the US. She has won several awards for her short films in the US. Ms. Puja will be sharing her movie making journey and inspire the young minds at VIT-AP.

The Department of English & Soft Skills organised a Faculty Development Programme entitled “Worlds are Made by Words: Language and Construction of Power” on Saturday the 11th of August 2018. Dr. Amit Ranjan, the Australia Awards Ambassador, a faculty at NCERT, Bhubaneswar,and an Indian English Poet delivered a series of lectures on the theme. He talked about how history was rewritten and reinterpreted and how language was used as a tool of power to subjugate the reality. He talked about how the theories of Darwin were used as a pseudoscientific tool to colonize the world and how the history always viewed the “white man’s burden” as an approved norm.

There was an interactive session on Australian Scholarships with students and research scholars following the lectures. It was followed by a poetry session hosted by Toastmasters Club in which he read excerpts from his newly published poetry collection Find Me Leonard Cohen I’m Almost Thirty. Many of the VIT-AP students read their poems. Faculty members, students and research scholars actively participated in the programme making it an interesting and highly interactive session.

The Department of (CSE), VIT-AP,  organized a 2 day FDP on Java Programming on 14^th and 15^th July 2018. The resource person for the event was Mr. Raja and Mr. Emmerson from Infosys.

The University Day was celebrated at VIT-AP Campus on 14th March 2018, amidst students and faculty members. The Chief guest for the event was Sri. Nara Lokesh, Honorable Minister, Panchayat Raj, Rural Development, I.T. and Communications, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh. The occasion was also graced by the Guest of Honor Dr.Murali Padmanabhan,Sr.Vice President and Head-Talent Management,Virtusa.

One day conclave on “Balancing Purpose and Technology” for the Principals of Intermediate Schools and Junior colleges in Hyderabad, was organised by VIT-AP in Hyderabad on the 27^th October, 2018. Around a hundred Principals from various International Schools, Kendriya Vidya Schools, other Aided and Government Schools of Telangana actively participated in the Programme.

Dr. Ashok, Commisioner of Intermediate Board Telangana State inaugurated the event. Dr. Indira Parkih, former Dean of IIM Ahmadabad and Founder President of FLAME University, gave a talk on “The Road Taken or Not: Enabling Future Generations to Make Choices”. Mr. Vishwas Anand, brought together latest thoughts on “Amplifying the Human Potential in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”. Dr. Rajiv Noronha spoke about the perspectives of the industry on his topic “Perspectives on Competencies Required for the Age of Industry 4.0”, Dr. Ganesh M.P enlightened the audience with his topic “School Leadership in Changing Times” and Mr. Naveen Kumar shared his insights on “Today’s Youth and the Quest for Meaning & Purpose”. The conclave turned out to be a wonderful platform for discussion on various issues that needed to be addressed at Intermediate college level to enable students to have a balanced sense of purpose and ambition of learning and adopting new technologies in the fast changing digital world.
